A Letter of Gratitude
Date:2020-11-06

Recently, the School of Statistics and Mathematics received a letter of gratitude from the Embassy of the Republic of Vanuatu in China. The letter specifically praised our faculty member Guo Yuanyuan and expressed gratitude for the significant efforts made by our school to ensure the health and safety of stranded international students from Vanuatu during the COVID-19 pandemic. The embassy also commended our university for its contributions to Sino-Vanuatu friendship and cultural exchange.

Since the outbreak of the global COVID-19 pandemic, Vanuatu closed its borders, resulting in EASU KALORIE (Chinese name: Fang Jun), a recent graduate from Vanuatu, being stranded on our university. To ensure the health and safety of the stranded student, our university strictly followed the relevant requirements of the Provincial Epidemic Prevention and Control Office and the Provincial Education Department. We prioritized the student's safety and health, implemented measures, closely monitored the situation, and provided strong support.

As the academic department responsible for educating this international student, the School of Statistics took multiple initiatives to coordinate with the university's logistics department. We assisted the student in extending their on-campus accommodation and provided them with epidemic prevention supplies, emphasizing the importance of personal protection. We aimed to provide the student with a warm sense of care. During the period of their stay, the student faced various inconveniences, such as being unable to send their new passport back to China and having their bank card frozen. Faculty member Guo Yuanyuan, along with other teachers from the School of International Education, actively helped the student contact the entry-exit management department and the bank, effectively resolving the student's living difficulties.

In recent years, our university has attached great importance to providing international students with an understanding of China through the "Perceive China" education program. We regularly conduct education on Chinese national conditions and cultural awareness. Based on the educational model of "Cognition-Identification-Practice" rooted in the concept of sharing multiple cultures, we have deepened international students' understanding and identification with Chinese ideas and the Chinese path, cultivating a group of outstanding international students who are knowledgeable about China, friendly towards China, and have an affection for China. The letter of gratitude from the Embassy of Vanuatu to our university is not only a recognition of our management of international students but also an affirmation of our achievements in international education.
